TUNE TOGETHER DISNEY PLUS

OVERVIEW

This case study explores an engaging and interactive Tune Together addition designed for Disney Plus, serving as a delightful feature for both party environments and bridging connections with distant loved ones. By utilizing smartphones, participants could seamlessly synchronize their presence within a shared virtual party room facilitated by the Disney+ server or app. Participants had the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of Disney songs and have the option to join in singing along with the corresponding scenes from the movies.

User interviews

‍I conducted interviews with five participants to gain insights into their usage of interactive games like Jackbox. The interview questions were specifically designed to explore their emotions and experiences related to Tune Together.

  1. RESEARCH

2. SYNTHESIZE

Insights from research: Based on research data, I've identified essential design goals and key features that address user needs and motivations. These findings guided the project's planning and development.

Needs:

‍• Phone synchronization: Enable players to sync their phones to find and select songs they want to sing.

• Remote player synchronization: Allow players who are not physically present to sync and participate in the game.

• Song categories: Provide a diverse range of song categories for players to choose from.

• Personalized song suggestions: Offer song recommendations based on the user's past song choices.

Motivation:

• Enjoyment of beloved Disney songs: Users can have fun singing Disney songs they love, creating a joyful and nostalgic experience.

• Tune Together game enhances social interactions and entertainment, making it an excellent choice for parties and friend gatherings.

• The game facilitates connection between distant friends, enabling them to sing together and also offers opportunities to meet new people through the app.

3. IDEATE

Because of limited time, I promptly conducted card sorting exercises. It became apparent that the Tune Together feature should focus solely on singing and exclude social media and video recordings. Including too many features would transform it into a standalone app rather than an extension of an existing service. Most importantly, it must serve as a well-designed Tune Together game.

SITEMAP AND USER TASK FLOW

After conducting additional research on the functionalities of both Jackbox and Disney Plus, I developed a user task flow that incorporates elements of site mapping. I found this integrated approach valuable as certain steps in the flow necessitate users to coordinate actions on a phone simultaneously. Therefore, mapping the user's decisions on the phone screen was crucial for effectively designing the site architecture.

4. UI DESIGN

WIREFRAMES

Using Figma, I translated my first sketches into low-fidelity wireframes that emphasized the essential features that were revealed during my interviews. These features encompassed several aspects, such as upfront presentation of best sellers, recommendations based on user reviews, display of product images worn by fellow users (via Instagram feed), and comprehensive fit metrics with included user reviews.

UI DESIGN

In the UI design created for the Tune Together addition in Disney Plus, careful attention was given to crafting an engaging and user-friendly experience. The interface features a clean and intuitive layout that allows users to seamlessly navigate through the various functionalities

5. TESTING

I conducted in-person prototype testing with three individuals, which was performed on a phone.

During this phase, the user was instructed to join the game by entering the game room code on their phone. They were then required to find and play the song "How Far I'll Go" from the movie Moana.

Players could participate in the game by utilizing their smartphones to input a distinct code either on the designated URL webpage or within the Disney+ application. Additionally, the game room could be accessed by scanning a QR code with the phone's camera.

Players had the option to choose the songs they desired to sing, either from the television or their mobile devices. The selected songs are shown alongside the player's avatar in the Tune Together queue. Subsequently, players engaged in singing along with the televised Tune Together game, utilizing their smartphones as the microphone.

After implementing the necessary revisions based on user feedback, I conducted another test with a fourth individual who successfully completed all the assigned tasks.

INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the Tune Together addition designed for Disney Plus offers an engaging and interactive singing experience that seamlessly synchronizes users in a shared virtual party room. Through user research and prototype testing, the feature was refined to prioritize essential functionalities such as song selection, joining game rooms, and synchronized singing. This project has deepened my appreciation for user-centred design principles and the iterative refinement process.

I am excited about the future possibilities of incorporating game-based user experiences in my design work. I look forward to embarking on further projects that continue to push the boundaries of design and deliver delightful user experiences within the digital entertainment landscape.
